Description
Stacks of rocks along a trail are called cairns, ducks or duckies. A cairn is a man-made stack of rocks used as a trail marker on trails that are easy to get turned around on. Cairns may not be directly on a trail but ensure that a trail is close by. Ducks or duckies are man-made stacks of rocks that have a pointed rock within them that point the trail direction.
I came upon this Cairn or Ducky on the face trail of Whiteface Mountain in the Belknap Range of Gilford, New Hampshire. It's a bit odd but none the less, marks the directions of the trail depending on which way you may be headed. Cairns are nice to have in the winter or fall where the trail may be hidden by snow or leaves.
